Bruges is a handsome maze of cobbles and canals, and the medieval city offers the perfect location for a European city getaway. Romantic and compact, fairy-tale Bruges is a wonderful destination for urban wandering, with many a market square lined with historic churches and cosy cafes. Visit in Spring, when temperatures are mild but the summer’s influx of tourists hasn’t yet arrived.
Songkran Water Festival, Thailand
The Songkran water festival is held annually to celebrate the traditional Thai New Year. The festival represents cleaning, purification and fresh starts. Expect up to three days of rowdy water fights, with people taking to the streets to dance and throw water at one another. The original celebrations are held around the old city moat in Chiang Mai, but festivities will be found across the nation.
This segment of Bavaria boasts spectacular mountain scenery and stunning water-based landscapes. Surrounded by no less than six mountain ranges, much of the area is made up of the Berchtesgaden National Park, which attracts hikers and nature-lovers. Be sure to pay a visit to the Konigssee, a lake so clean its emerald waters appear crystal clear.
